I pride myself on not having to know when the first day of school is now. For years, the back to school prep for four kids during the hottest part of summer almost sent me over the edge. When I see moms in the store, list in hand, kids trailing behind them, I feel thankful.
Some places are calm and quiet now, like Half Price books, where I sold back almost all of the DVDs, a couple books, and a puzzle while I picked up a copy of the next book for book club. I figure I will keep book club, even though they lean towards Sci/Fi. It was fun to meet other adults for a beer and talk.
I was noticing that this particular shrub out front didn't look as full as the others. Was I not watering it enough? (we definitely need rain) Same with the Wandering Jew pictured below...
A bunch of the tops were gone and I noticed a leaf now and then outside of the edging. Then early one morning I noticed two deer in the front yard, feasting.
A quick order to Home Depot and a painless pick-up process got me a spray bottle of deer spray. Do you know they make a spray for just about anything you want to discourage in your yard? It smells so bad, but it actually works. I am OK with the deer peacefully chowing down in the nearby greenbelt. But in my landscaping, they are giant rats and need to mosey on.
Brigid managed to run over a carpet razor, slashing herself*. I should have taken a photo of it - it was impressive. Props to Traveler's roadside assist who sent someone out in 6 p.m. Austin traffic within minutes to change the tire. Then it was off to Discount Tire the next day for a new tire and the hazard certificates on all four tires. July and August have been pricey months.
*note: I think I handled that pretty well!
This week was my last in physical therapy for my old lady shoulder.
The PT asked me how I felt and said she thought it could be graduation day for me - yay! I got through my routine in record time and banged the celebration gong while everyone applauded, then signed the banner. I have been a bit sore here and there, but feel back to being strong. I will continue my home exercises and be mindful of body mechanics. Work smarter, not harder, Gina.
Happy weekend!

Shoulder pain is horrible as basic life just gets interrupted. I'm glad Bridget is fixed, even though pricey. Safe cars are good cars.
Now I'm wondering just how bad that deer spray smells! Glad PT worked so well for you.
As a former teacher and mom of now out of school kids, yes, I too am happy that the back to school rush is not something I have to participate in...
I’m glad to hear that physical therapy is over for you. No pain is any fun, but shoulder pain really is no joke. Your mention of Half Price books has me thinking that I should go there. I have loads of cookbooks that I have been sent for review that I just cannot hang onto. That said, they used to give decent money for new books, now they hardly give anything. Still, better that than storing them.
I did not know they made deer spray! Something ate my rose bush completely; it's just stick in the ground at this point and I'm not sure it will make a comeback next year. BUT, I can't figure out what is eating it! So glad to hear you graduated from PT. My husband is supposed to start going for his back and I keep reminding him it will only work if he actually shows up and doesn't keep canceling/ postponing it.
Book club was at my house today. Now I have nice leftovers in my fridge and a clean house! :) One member brought a whiskey slush from her freezer, yum!
I swear the deer here just snicker at us for even trying to dissuade them from our yard. Sometimes we have had close to two dozen at a time in our front yard! When I'm at the kitchen sink and they are sneering, I do my best coyote impression, then Rudy joins in, then the deer get nervous and mosey along at their you-don't-scare-us pace, we're just leaving because we've eaten all the good stuff. :)
I hope your plants will thrive now that you have the awful-smelling spray. I wonder how often you have to "refresh" it.
Great to know you're done with PT.
I am mad-jealous about the book store. I have often wondered how I would fare in PT. I hope never to find out.
