How the weeks go now

My weeks pretty much blur into each other with all of the days going about the same:
Saturday, Sunday - 12 hours shifts at the hospital.
Leave the house at 640ish, clock in at 7 am, clock out at 730pm. Rinse and repeat for Monday, but everything slides forward 1 hour.
The commute is nice, the parking is nice, I like my co-workers, the work load is doable. But on Monday night, I am spent. So, Tuesday is my day to do laundry, buy food, and relax with no big plans. That leaves Wednesday through Friday to do projects, creative things, cleaning, etc. Its a comfortable routine now, 3 years in to my new job.  This week:
*I'm meeting a friend for a beer
*have a telehealth appointment
*reviewing my budget
*selling some stuff back to Half Price Books
*doing some yardwork
*on-call Wednesday
*working on my family history
*seeing the dentist for a cleaning
On Friday, I will food prep for the weekend, do some light housework, take myself to lunch, and read. Bed by 9 pm.
Right now, the days and weeks look predictable and for that, I am mostly glad. Its a different place than I assumed I would be in 5 years ago.  I know it won't be this way forever, and I will have to adjust the days again in the future to add even more free time and pursuits.
Not all change is bad, right?

Temporarily stuck in July

 Last week felt pretty poopy*.
But this one has better vibes and a lighter schedule.
I stayed as busy as I could and enjoyed a quiet, cool house (with no Pandora), my scented candle, and minimal cooking.
I don't want to be one of those people who feel like they need to ritual mourn every deathiversary.  And I am tired of referring to myself as a widow.  Just my Hot Take on it all: it has gotten very old.  And keeps me stuck in a place I never wanted to go to.
Instead, I want to take back my summer.  Its my time to get some yard work and odd jobs done. (Mr. Lawn Mower Maintenance Guy is coming this week)  I want to sit on my deck. Get some sun. Read more books. Take myself out to lunch.
Finish up this photo album project which, as I have written before, is harder than I thought it would be.  That's OK, I will take it in small bites until it is done.  Then I will spread a puzzle out over this table, and put those albums in the bookcase.
That collage wall is taking me ages to complete, too.  I don't have the same Energizer Bunny mojo I used to have.  July has sucked the life out of me for the last time.
When I get to feeling this way, I tackle some cleaning and organization. So, goodbye scrubs that don't fit and flip flops that are falling apart and holey socks.  I'm going to end July on a high note.  And next year, it will start on one, too.

Homebody me

One thing I re-learned about myself recently:
I am a homebody at heart.
I traveled lightly!

Much as I loved putting my feet in the sand and feeling the warm summer sun and cool breezes off the Gulf, home is my Happy Place.  Two days away from home is always the outside limit for me, and I have always been this way.  As a child, we spent summers visiting family while my mother worked and even if we were having a blast I had some serious homesickness.  I remember feeling that way when we had Highlands, too.  On Sunday afternoons I was READY to get back home to my own home and bed, even though Mark was grumpy about it.  When I spent two nights at the hospital for the ice storm in January, I was so ready to get home that I was willing to face my fears driving through icy Austin to get there, crying as soon as I hit the front door.
Its just how I am wired.
I had a good time at the coast and I can cross it off my summer bucket list, but in future I will look for day trips, closer to home.  I still want to be independent, still feel capable, still want to have fun.
But I am definitely a homebody!

5 thing Friday - shoe bench, sammiches, rain, yardwork, empty day

Please forgive all of the dark photos - we've had nothing but gloomy days and rain rain rain.  After a few tweaks, I can't make these pics look that much better!
I was tired of the shoe basket in this corner by the front door.  The Shoe Basket was something we started when the kids were small.  It was a way not to play the "hunt for your shoes before we have to run out of the door to school" game.  Instead I now have a nice bench to stow my work/tennies/house shoes, and to sit when taking them off and on.  No more holding onto the wall, ha ha.
I have entered my Sandwich Era.  Toasting the bread with some cheese on top, adding some sliced tomatoes, plenty of Miracle Whip - my kind of lunch or dinner.  Cheaper than takeout, although I'm not sure its all that healthier.  But it gets me out the kitchen fast and makes for fewer dishes to wash.  Wins all around.
During a break in the clouds I took pics of the Wandering Jew in the backyard.
I know its considered an invasive species, but I like it.  I haven't had a lot of time to do yardwork in between storms.  I managed to get it mowed, and even sprinkled some grass seed.  That's about all Mother Nature is allowing right now.
On my "empty day" I took myself to Bertram for a trip to Donut Plus (an old favorite),
a pedicure (sweet lilac color) followed by yet another sandwich, and a trip to "my" winery.  It was a lovely day, high of 63!, thunderstorms that shook me to my bones as I sat wrapped in a Mexican blanket on their patio, journaling and making plans.  I really don't have many complaints right now, and I will strive to get better at acknowledging that every day.

5 thing Friday - crayons, surge protector, earrings, scrub tops, leisure

This week for some reason (I mean, its not Back to School time), HEB had all of their crayons, markers, and such for 20% off, so you know I had to get some supplies for my little art cart.
As one of many children at home, I remember well the thrill of a big box of crayons all. for. me.  So I got a box I don't have to share now, either, ha ha.  Because apparently 65 is the new 5.  Therapy in a box.
I don't know what it is with me and batteries (and plumbing, and car tires).  Mark had many devices around the house that require them and sometimes figuring them out is challenging to me.  When I heard a mysterious beeping coming from the office, I discovered that this back-up/surge protector in fact has a battery.  I'm not sure when he purchased this - 2020?  As with a lot of these gadgets, he didn't really explain how they work or how to set them up.  I am assuming he bought it because he was working from home.  Its a nice one, and the battery is pricey.  Of course it is.
Did I rely on Google lens to identify it?  Yes.  I also watched a short You Tube video on how to replace the battery.  Which I then ordered from Amazon.  And now my printer, computer, router, and sharpener are back in business.  And I will take the old battery to Home Depot to recycle it.
A couple of fun purchases.  The first one are these pretty Mother of Pearl earrings from an Etsy shop.  Kinda small, but appropriate for work and light and easy to wear.  Me like.
Also two new scrub tops because some of mine are getting tighter...
I have made some changes in how I care for me, and if someday they are too large, that's OK.  I also managed to buy myself some protein powder, a blender bottle, and a thrift store novel.  And a hotel for a beachy vacay in June.
In keeping with my plan to relax the To Do list and do things for leisure one day a week, I took myself to a movie yesterday, seeing The Drama.  What an interesting, quirky film and very thought provoking!  I wouldn't call the ending "happy" but it took the story back to the start, full circle.  I liked it.
Have a great weekend,

Pros and cons: thinking about retirement

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about how retirement will play out.  I am starting the process, even though I know that I'm still a couple of years out from making big changes.

Having my own desk at work feels unusual for me but I kinda love it

Over 30 years, more or less, I have worked hard to get to get to where I am right now with a great shift (Saturday through Monday), a boss who values me, an easier workday, increased pay, and maximized benefits.  And work provides me with intangibles, too, like socialization and a sense of purpose.  My weekends bookend my days off, which are easier traffic-wise and in setting appointments. Those four days off provide me with lots of rest, free time to work on my hobbies or my home, and time to meet up with friends and family.  There are several reasons for me to keep working, and not one I can think of right now to stop.
This was an epiphany of sorts to me.
I can plan for retirement in the future, but I will continue working this job and this schedule until I am ready to pull back.  A lot of what feels unlikeable about my day-to-day living is like burnout, and I can take steps to improve that.  In every job, no matter how much you love or value it, there are going to be challenges.
Anyway, that's where my head is today.  The week ahead holds a book club meeting, starting a new book (The Frozen River), continuing the photo project, getting my desk organized, and doing a bit of yardwork.  Missing from the list will be worrying about the future!

5 thing Friday - Spring, book club, organizing files, meals, photos

Its been a long couple of weeks - finally spring feels like its here (in Austin) and the weather has been beautiful.  I have been walking about 25 minutes a day, out in the sun.  Sometimes raking the leaves.  Sometimes watering the grass.  Sometimes just sitting on my patio with a glass of wine, decompressing.
I found another book club and am enjoying chatting with people my own age and gender about books.  That seems like a small thing, but I feel like most of my friends are younger than me, so this is a chance to be with, more or less, my peers.  {This was an election sign outside of the library where we meet.  I promise I am not running for office!}
I am ordering less and less from Amazon, opting to shop in person whenever possible.  One of the reasons is pictured above - an anticipated book purchase that turned out to be not what I ordered.  A couple of weeks ago it was washi art tape that did not arrive, even though I was charged.  I know it sounds like an old lady thing to say, but I think I would just rather know I am getting exactly what I am paying for.  In both cases, a resolution was had.  But still.
I dragged out all 9 of the life insurance policies* and had a meeting with the agent (an associate of Mark's) who is helping me stay on top of them.  In addition I updated my VIP notebook where I store a household inventory, legacy list, copies of important documents, and all this policy information.  It was kind of overwhelming and made me feel a little sad, but I know that since I am organized, my kids will have an easier time of it when they need this information some day.  We will call it a gift of love, from me to them.
Nothing exciting on the food front, unless you count me making a batch of cookie dough for the freezer (recipe on Monday) and eating a couple of lunches out this week.  I also did an overnight crockpot of butter beans with some ham.  Dinners have been more streamlined and usually involve a protein and a veggie, like above.  I keep it simple and its manageable.  I run the dishwasher every other day or so and clean the kitchen each night before bed.  Maybe simplicity was the key after all!
The photo project is slowly coming along.  I find that I can only do about an hour at a time on it - its so hard to relive memories of a happier time.  I know it wasn't all roses - raising four kids and experiencing all the curve balls life threw at us.  But the photos show smiling, happy, loving, beautiful children and their parents.  And sometimes, I wish I could go back in time, just for a day.
I do need to finish this up so I can use this table for my jigsaw puzzles!

*Mark was an insurance agent for 36 years, as well as a Certified Risk Manager and Certified Insurance Counselor.  He worked at John Hancock, Prudential, and Nationwide, among others. Most of these policies were purchased when the kids were born, or very young, and there are a mix of term, whole life, and accidental death.  The premiums on them are low and since I am not sure if my 30 somethings have life insurance, I will keep these from lapsing until they can take over. I am the owner and primary bennie, siblings are contingents for each other.  For now, I will hold onto them.

5 thing Friday - feeding myself, sweet potato plant, heart charm, license, BP cuff

Although I am not posting menus, I have settled into a dinner cooking routine of 4 nights out of 7 and having very simple things to eat when I get home from work.  A quesadilla, bowl of cereal, or Chick-fil-A chicken patty with some mac and cheese helps me avoid most kitchen duty on days I work.
If I make a big pan of something, I can portion some of it out for work lunches. Here I fixed cacio e pepe ravioli from TJ with some ground beef, marinara, the rest of a tomato I was trying to use up, and about a cup of frozen peas.  'Twas pretty good and freezes well.
About twice a week for lunch I have one of those chopped salads with cabbage, etc., and some added protein, plus dibs and dabs of other things (pickles, beets, the rest of the 3 bean salad that was lurking in the fridge).  I never thought it particularly hard to feed myself until Mark died. You wouldn't think it should be so difficult to manage.
I'm trying to grow a sweet potato plant here from an actual sweet potato.  Will it work?  I'm not sure, but please notice my use of large paper clips since I didn't have toothpicks.  (Also the recycled pasta jar from the ravioli.) This window is the one that gets morning sun.  Its been so pretty outside that I am ready to bring all of my plants back out of the garage and arrange them on the patio.
Happy Valentine's Day to me.  I added a charm that finishes out my charm bracelet in a very pretty way.  {I had the armadillo removed, as it was heavier than the other charms and made the bracelet feel bulky and slide to one side} A reminder to show myself some kindness and love.  I have been wearing it and enjoying the pretty sound it makes and the good memories it invokes.
I have been missing Mom lately.  While I was working on the photo project I found this old driver's license of hers.  In high school, it used to make me laugh when she pulled it out while writing a check somewhere.  She was in the middle of saying "yes, I'm ready!" when the woman snapped her photo.
She would say "stop acting the fool!" as I laughed away.
When she got her new license she sent this to me.  I was in college and we wrote each other letters all of the time. It lives above my desk now and makes me smile.  She looked so young here, and so thin.
The dental hygienist used a wrist BP cuff for me last week that seemed like it was more accurate than the bulky arm one I have.  And easier to use!  So I bought myself one with some HSA $.  I need to pair it with the app and it will sit right here on my desk.  My BP is well-managed, but I want to take charge of recording it and reporting back to my doc, holding myself accountable for taking care of ME.
Happy Valentine's Day tomorrow!

Going and doing in 2026

Looking forward into the year, I am trying to schedule fun things to do and places to go - very much like I did last year. (here's a good reason why) I want to switch it up so that it seems new and fresh.  Plus I want to discover more about where I live, what is out there, and try not to break the bank while I'm at it.  Currently I have two more symphonies, a string quartet, and book clubs on the calendar.  But I want to find the quirky, one-of-a-kind Austin things and find new places to visit.
On Saturday, I went to see KC and The Sunshine Band at ACL Live.  I know I have gone downtown many times, but this time it was so cold out! and I had to navigate by foot to the venue after parking a few blocks away.  I got there in plenty of time and it was fun to people watch as I sipped my wine.
Its such a great place for a concert - seems like every seat is a good one.  There are bars on every level so the lines aren't ridiculous.  Having said that, I usually limit myself to one drink, as I am the driver, at night, and by myself.  Plus, drinks are pricey and take a bite out of your entertainment budget.
Such a great seat - however, I'm going to consider getting a floor seat in the future - its like a party down there, people on their feet the whole time.  This concert was full of my generation, too!  Time to have fun while we still can  (:
KC turned 75 the day of this show - he and Mark share a birthday, 10 years apart.  The band was really good, the music great, KC still out there gettin' it done, engaging and expressing his love for the crowd.  It was awesome.  And it was great for me to get off work early, then come in late on Sunday.  A win all around.  I'm looking forward to continue to get out and about this year!

5 thing Friday - treats management, dishwasher, handling things, corn casserole, new purse

The title of this post should be "Thank God December is Over".  Because try as I might, I cannot seem to escape the Cannary tradition on ending the year in disaster. And it usually involves plumbing of some kind.
I made it through the weekend just fine, even after the push of Christmas and working extra hours.  On Saturday I took a bunch of sweets to the breakroom at work to clear them out of my kitchen.  Apparently a lot of other people had that same idea.  By Monday, myself and another person were just throwing the rest of the uneaten stuff away.  But I did manage to save a baggie of some stollen Bubbie brought over.
On Tuesday, I was showered and dressed, ready to tackle the week, heading out the door to grocery shop, I noticed that the KITCHEN WAS FLOODED.
In a mild panic I grabbed the shop vac and started sucking water out of the dishwasher and realized the water was still flowing INTO it.  So I got under the sink and shut the water off.
I gotta admit, I did shed tear or two.  This was not on my short list of ways to celebrate the end of the year.  There was so much water, it was leaking outside of the house, onto the patio. Thank GOD I hadn't yet left the house to grocery shop!
After waiting most of a day to hear back from a plumber, I reasoned out to myself  "I bet its an issue with the dishwasher, as the water pouring into it was still hot.  If the water was flowing, it must not be a water issue. Let me contact the appliance repair guy".  A short phone call and text with the model number followed, and hopefully he will be here today to replace a valve assembly.*
New Year's Eve was quiet.  I made myself a steak and some broccoli with a twice baked potato.  I washed my dishes in the guest bathtub.  I read a book with my feet up.  I was in bed at 8 p.m.
As I have stated before, the year may end badly, but it will not begin badly.  I enjoyed a lunch yesterday of roast pork, corn casserole, coleslaw, and this delightful Moscato from a co-worker.  I mostly putseyed around the house and read and napped and did whatever I wanted to.  So I really have no complaints.  But I would enjoy having running water in the kitchen.
Corn casserole has been a craving for me since Thanksgiving.  I will freeze it in portions and feel the love all of January and probably into February.  Ha!

Merry Christmas to me, the hard-working mom who is single-handedly figuring out her shit and getting things done.  She will not be deterred from moving forward into the New Year and has plans.  And she needs a good purse for that, so she ordered herself one that she can sling over her body as she leaves her house to take over the world - in style!
Happy New Year,

Gina

*Thank goodness I followed up with him today because no, he had not ordered the part yet, and it may be Wednesday before I have both water and a dishwasher in the kitchen.  A few more tears were shed. I'm still going to take over the world, dammit.

5 thing Friday - simple decor, Christmas tree, feeling peaceful, firepit, sangria

 (not in chrono order!)
The day after Thanksgiving I feel like I was on my feet most of the day.  I didn't go crazy with Christmas decor around the house - I know who has to put it all back up, and she would appreciate it being a painless process!
I decided for the first time ever to hang the family stockings on the mantel.  I also put the two rattan reindeer in a bed of evergreens.  The Girl took my stocking home with her.  Nothing exciting to see here...
But I also wove fairy lights into it and at night it comes on while I sit reading and sipping tea.
(later I added simple red bows to their necks, but I am DONE pinky promise)
Very peaceful.  That's been my word of the year for most of 2025 - peace.  I would like to move through this season as calmly as possibly.  No big fuss.  No pressure.  No overspending.
I hauled out the vintage Christmas tree and decorated it very simply.  At this date I also have some gifts wrapped and all of the shopping done - just waiting on those Amazon deliveries!  I did not buy even one new ornament. Nor lights. I'm still debating whether or not to send cards.
Right now, I feel good.
I have been focusing on eating healthily, exercising, getting enough sleep, and staying in the moment.  All things I hope will carry me through the month with no drama.
Thanksgiving was a good day - here Firstborn is trying to get the initial tee pee started so we can feed the firepit all afternoon.  I ordered a new grate for the wood to sit on yesterday.  This little firepit is 23 years old and going strong.  I plan on sitting out here at least one evening a week.  I am so glad to have that store of firewood.
The Autumn Sangria was a hit!
To my large jar I added most of a small bottle of brandy (at least two cups), a large bottle of inexpensive red wine, about a quart of honeycrisp apple cider, and a 2 L bottle of cranberry sprite.  I also threw in some sprigs of rosemary and some sliced oranges, and I made giant ice cubes in plastic drink cups.  We drank the entire thing.  (:
Have a good weekend!
