Weekend re-cap - Save the World, Highlands, Camp Rustown

On Saturdays and Sundays we have a "hard stop" rule at noon - that way we can get things done and chores don't bleed over into the heat of the afternoon.  What doesn't get done by noon can be picked up again the next day.  Hubby went with Bubbie to get the Baja inspected and did a couple of odd jobs.  I cleaned out the freezer and fridge, and did some other small chores I can't remember now...  At noon thirty we hit the road, stopping in Liberty Hill to buy ice, then Bertram for a burn barrel.  Then we drove through Chicken Express to get lunch for our next stop:
Save the World Brewing Co.
It wasn't crowded inside in the A/C, but its easier to have a conversation out in the tank room.  We played some cards, ate our chicken, met some new folks.  (Turns out, two of the people we met had some recent misfortune with a burn barrel, and we had just been talking about how we were going to construct and use ours)
We enjoyed some Peach Saison, some Coconut Milk Lux, and Cherry Bonus Pastor.  All very delicious on a hot day.  And its nice to meet new people from the area and learn more about the place where we will finally land.
That evening we sat out at Highlands to watch the sunset - too hot to do anything else.
We heard an owl, a boat now and again, traffic on 2341.
 It was very peaceful.
We did end up building a fire but while the sun was going down a candle was all we needed.  I have zero pics of dinner, but it was grilled chicken thighs with zucchini.  We went to bed late because we wanted to make sure the fire was burned down sufficiently.
The next day, after we cooked breakfast, Hubby got the burn barrel going.  He used materials found in the property dump (some odds and ends of rebar and steel fencing, as well as an old A/C drip pan), and we proceeded to burn some things.  I continued working on removal of nails and screws around the area of the barn.  The previous owner did not use a burn barrel, and every time it rains some new metal odds and ends seem to appear.  I sure don't want Hubby or anyone else getting a flat out there because of it.  I use one of those retractable magnet tools and it works great.
We didn't see many critters this time around - they are probably hiding in the shade - but I did find a snake molt near the barn.   We again stopped at noon, ate lunch, got some sun, took a shower, and headed to Sonic for a cold drink.  We didn't get as much done this weekend but oh, how the heat takes it out of you!  We had a wonderful dinner of French Onion Chicken, Loaded Mashed Potatoes, and broccoli/cauliflower, followed by chocolate cream pie.
And ended Sunday on an exhausted and happy note.

  1. Sounds like a great way to spend the weekend. And, I love your by noon rule. Need to remember that one. It gets so darn hot in the summertime.
